Quran Challenge

Have you read the Quran from cover to cover? In Arabic? How about in your own language? Is this something that you haven’t quite gotten around to? Have you read it before but now it’s getting a bit dusty? Do you feel guilty about not making time for it?

First and foremost, as a reminder to myself, Ustadh said that the sahabah would consider a person sinful if they did not complete the reading of the Quran every forty days. Every forty days! I didn’t know that and I admit that I was not doing that. Not even close. He told us that there’s no way around it. You should be doing it. End of story.

“IQRA” was the command, not “Read it when you find some free time.” We have the time for everything else, why not the book that we profess to love and cherish? Have a doctor’s appointment? Waiting on your husband to leave the masjid? Sitting on the bench while the children play in the park? Even a few minutes a day can get you closer to Jannah, InshaALLAH.

In April, I seriously upped my reading to forty pages a day – in English. That was a bit over the top. I’ve cut it down to 20 pages a night and I should be finished reading by the end of this week. Next, I want to read the entire Quran in Arabic before Ramadan starts, InshaALLAH. I will keep you posted from time to time so that you can see how that’s going. Oh, and I could use some encouragement so that I don’t get lazy. You’re all very good with the encouragement, by the way. You’re like those people who cheer when the runners pass by in marathons. 😉

How about you? Are there any takers? Would you like to start reading the Quran (in any language) cover to cover before Ramadan starts? Come on, I know you can do it! You will be doing something wonderful and get rid of that guilty feeling.  Still need encouragement? Listen to what Shaykh Bilal Ismail has to say:

InshaALLAH, I hope that you join me, if you do, take a button so that others can join us too:

Assalamu alaykum. SubhanAllah I really struggle to read the Quran in English. I can read it in Arabic and I will stop to read a few translated ayahs as I find that when I just try to read a large portion in English I don’t remember half of what I’ve read. I just have a very bad concentration span. Reading the Arabic holds my attention because I have to pay attention to the tajweed and rulings etc. May Allah make it easy for us to read His book, learn it and practice it ameen.

    • Umm Maryam says:

wa alaykum as salaam. Indeed. I’ve been told over and over again that the true meaning doesn’t unfold in English and that we lose the beauty of the Quran when we don’t know Arabic. All the more reason for me to learn the language, InshaAllah. May Allah make things easy for you and your family in all your endeavors, Ameen.
